The Flat Rock Playhouse, The State Theatre of North Carolina, produces the highest quality professional theatre while teaching theatre arts through a multifaceted educational program.
Established at Flat Rock, NC, by Robroy Farquhar in 1952, Flat Rock Playhouse engages artists and craftpersons who continue to produce accessible and high quality professional theatre while teaching theatre arts to students, interns and apprentices. The Executive Director provides operational oversight and supervision of staff, programs—artistic and educational--and finances. The successful candidate’s responsibilities and skills include:
Professional Executive Leadership * Has vision and enthusiasm for Flat Rock Playhouse’s mission * Capable of building relationships with the various constituencies – the board of trustees, staff, artists, actors, donors, North Carolina Legislators, local and state governments, schools, universities, theatres and arts organizations * Possesses intelligent listening skills * Able to transform influential connections into actionable items * Is secure and confident in her/his ability to work closely with experienced staff * Has integrity and moral character * Has appreciation for the history and traditions of Flat Rock Playhouse and the Vagabond School of the Drama
Artistic and Creative * Will use personal knowledge and experience to provide oversight and counsel to staff members to whom she/he has delegated responsibility for theatre productions * Has and/or develops an understanding of the elements—artistic and financial—for building a successful Playhouse season * Maintains personal relationships with actors and directors * Respects the need to balance play casts between patron favorites and new/younger performers
Education Commitment * Understands and respects the Playhouse commitment to education * Has identifiable theatre education experience * Will provide oversight and counsel to YouTheatre staff * Will provide imaginative approach to YouTheatre marketing Resource Development * Has demonstrated success in securing diversified funding sources from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government and is knowledgeable about Planned Giving * Is entrepreneurial and accomplished in leveraging resources * Is confident in her/his ability to raise annual unrestricted gift income with personal relationships built on trust engaging the board of trustees and strengthening the alliance with the State of North Carolina * Secures and balances a mixture of ticket sales and contributed income * Has experience working on a capital campaign of $1 million or more
Financial, personnel and organizational management * Has demonstrated success managing a budget of $3 million, a full-time staff of 25 and part-time staff of 150 during the season * Capable of empowering, engaging and elevating staff members * Easily adaptable to productive change and planned growth * Has ability to communicate finances, budgets, revenues and expenditures clearly * Ensures the efficient operational management and maintenance of the Playhouse’s sixteen acre campus including facilities and equipment * Is accountable to the board of trustees * Experienced in building a staff team while holding staff members accountable s * Has demonstrated knowledge of Actors’ Equity contracts and able to represent the Playhouse in contract negotiations
Communication * Is a motivational speaker comfortable speaking to diverse audiences * Can clearly articulate the mission and increase Flat Rock Playhouse’s visibility and, marketability, and fund raising * Possesses intrinsic interpersonal skills, comfortable with all constituents * Has exceptional written and oral communication skills * Advocates for local, state and Federal appropriations for Flat Rock Playhouse and arts education * Maintains consistent and reliable communication with the board and staff
