Bull City Rising commented this weekend on a very short story on WRAL about the end of Broadway musicals at the Progress Energy Center. Broadway Series South has thrown in the towel to the Durham Performing Arts Center. Since DPAC has a deep partnership with the Nederlander Group, which is a Broadway heavy-hitter that produces shows and owns and/or runs many presenting houses, it's really no great surprise. The biggest surprise might be that it took this long.
So, Broadway Series South may no longer bring in Broadway musicals, but they will apparently still bring in musical tribute shows like RAIN, ABBA MANIA and GET THE LED OUT as well as comedians and performances such as THE PEKING ACROBATS.
Progress Energy Center is also set to open an outdoor amphitheater this May which will apparently host some of these performances.
