Durham Arts Council School Director



Durham Arts Council, a leading arts agency in North Carolina, seeks School Director for its DAC Community Arts School. This position provides leadership,
management, program development and administration for the DAC School and provides faculty supervision
and support for a variety of classes, workshops, camps and programs. The DAC School offers approximately 600 classes
and workshops each year in visual arts, dance, design and media arts,
photography, theatre, music, literary arts, and summer camps to 3,000+ students
of all ages, and generates annual revenues of approximately $350,000. Position
supervises 1.5 FTE department staff, and 75 contracted instructors. The DAC School is a key program area of the Durham
Arts Council which provides a broad range of local arts agency programs and
services for the public and arts community. Position reports to Durham Arts
Council Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS &
EXPERIENCE

The DAC School Director will be an individual with a minimum of 3 years proven
experience in developing, implementing, managing, marketing, and evaluating
adult and youth arts instructional programs in response to diverse educational
and community interests and needs. Excellent verbal and written communication
skills, strong organization skills, budget administration skills, and computer
skills required. Excellent interpersonal, supervisory, and customer service
skills required. Bachelor’s degree in arts administration, arts education, fine
arts or related field required. The individual must be comfortable working in a
team environment that is both entrepreneurial and mission-driven. Successful
candidate will be a strategic thinker, comfortable with technology, and able to
establish and maintain positive relationships internally and externally.

Full time position; salary commensurate with experience, and excellent

Education and Outreach Coordinator - North Carolina Dance Theatre is the Southeast’s premier repertory dance company under the artistic direction of Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux and Patricia McBride, both celebrated New York City Ballet alumni. NCDT is seeking a responsible, mature individual to serve in a full-time administrative position, in NCDT’s Education and Outreach Department. Under the supervision of the Director of Education and Outreach, responsibilities include but are not limited to, communicating with constituents via email, telephone and fax; corresponding with schools and community organizations, maintaining specific database and records; updating educational guides and evaluative tools and generally coordinating all aspects of current education/outreach programming and new education/outreach initiatives. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:Coordination of all aspects of NC Dance Theatre’s Educational Theatre Performances including booking reservations, communications and payment collections; coordinate school communications, database entries and bookkeeping for other specific education/outreach programs; maintaining and updating residency schedules and Teaching Artist schedules; coordinate and maintain schedules for NCDT2 Lecture Demonstration Tours and Middle School Performance Programs; update educational guides and materials; opportunities to serve as a Teaching Artist, as schedule permits. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS: Bachelor degree in the arts, arts administration, dance or dance education or equivalent professional experience; outstanding interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and an ability to work cooperatively with diverse populations; computer skills and database management skills essential including proficiency with MS Word, Excel and Publisher; attention to detail and strong organizational skills; ability to multi-task, work independently and to problem-solve; arts related teaching experience and/or experience in outreach activities--a plus. North Carolina Theatre is a professional regional theatre in Raleigh that has been in operation for 25 years. In addition to producing a season of Broadway-quality musicals, NC Theatre operates an education program that consists of a nine-month after school Conservatory for the Performing Arts, summer camps, outreach efforts and various other programs. 

Programming:
The ED will work with instructors and Executive Director to further develop existing programs. The ED will also work to expand the current curriculum while assessing the current position of the education program and developing a clear and concise vision for the future of the program.

Community Relations:
The ED will work to develop community partnerships that will help to further NCT’s education programs. This will require the ability to speak about the vision and the needs of the program to parents, volunteers, and community leaders. The ED will also work with the NCT staff to develop a marketing plan for the program and coordinate fund raising efforts that include grant reporting and scholarships.

Management:
The ED must be able to manage the current education staff and be able to exercise sound decision-making to ensure that daily duties are fulfilled in a timely fashion. The ED will be responsible for communication and procedures for all events and showcases that involve the education department. The ED must be well versed in the budget process and be able to create and implement a Polices and Procedures Handbook. The ED is also responsible for the Conservatory facility including making sure the appropriate maintenance is being provided. 

Qualifications:

Prefer someone that has been involved during the growth process of similar program. The ideal candidate will have knowledge and understanding of arts education theory; familiarity with public school systems; familiarity with professional theatre; experience working with volunteers and parents; knowledge and understanding of the education and performing arts environment; understanding of computer software applications; appropriate writing style and telephone, e-mail and interpersonal skills and a general familiarity with the practices and procedures of not for profit arts organizations and/or local government agencies.
