About the show
Raleigh Little Theatre proves again that dreams really can come true. The beautiful lass-who-lost-her-slipper makes her 26th annual appearance in hopes of finding her Prince Charming. This beloved fairy tale, retold in the style of English pantomime, has been delighting audiences in the Triangle area for more than a quarter century. Combine elegant costumes and magical scenery with song and dance, conniving steprelatives with a zany Fairy Godmother, and you have all of the ingredients for holiday cheer.
About the roles
The roles in Cinderella are cast age-appropriately: The Mouse/ponies are the youngest (ages 8-12). The Pages are next oldest (ages 12-15). The rest of The Ensemble is comprised of adults and youth (who look mature enough to realistically be considered appropriate guests at the Ball).
No roles in Cinderella are pre-cast!!! All veteran cast members must audition in order to be considered for this year's production!!!!
Principal Roles
THE FAIRY GODMOTHER: [Character Soprano] This heart-of-gold denizen of fairyland requires an actress of great warmth and contagious humor and high spirits. She serves as narrator and together with her two helpers motivate much of the action.
THE FAIRY HELPERS: [Tenor/Baritone] These two side-kicks of The Fairy Godmother live to do her bidding, blundering comically hither and yon to assist her in her good works. Some skills in clowning, tumbling, juggling may be useful. These are actually the largest roles in the show!
CINDERELLA: [High Lyric Soprano] You know her already: sweet, warm, kind, noble, etc. She must be able to capture the hearts of all who see her.
THE WICKED STEPMOTHER: [Character Mezzo] One of the great comedic roles in the genera. She must be able to dominate her unholy progeny with strength and style and still be able to bring tears of laughter.
HENRIETTA & GERTRUDE: [Tenor and Baritone "falsettists"] Cinderella's ugly stepsisters, these are fabulous roles for comic actors. In the tradition of the English Pantomime, these outrageous characters are played en travestie (or in "drag") and require strong comic performers.
PRINCE CHARMING: [Tenor or High Baritone]: This gallant heart-throb must be able to endure the slings and arrows of his father's topsy-turvy kingdom with the strength of character to hold out long enough to find his true lady-love. Actor with deft comic timing can prevent the character form becoming too stodgy and unappealing.
KING DARLING III: ["Character" Baritone]: This well-intentioned monarch suffers from a short-sightedness that transcends his very real physical handicap and nearly prevents his son from finding his own true love. Again, a great comic role.
THE YOUNG PRINCE CHARMING: [Boy Soprano]: Portrays the Prince as a young boy and, in a flashback sequence, sings a beautiful duet with his older self. Voice, charm and discipline are everything in this important cameo role.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Ensemble:
- There is a solo quartet (SATB) in the prologue.
- There is a specialty dance (Wooden shoe clog) for three young ladies and one man and one "character " actress/dancer. (Experience in tap or clogging helpful)
- This production requires an energetic group of singer/dancers who double as the enthusiastic burgers of the town as well as the exquisite guests at the ball.
- Two teen-agers (boys or girls) will be cast as the appropriately eccentric PAGES in King Darling's court. Considerations for these roles will be vocal strength, dance, energy and "presence".
- Last, but not least, there are roles for six youngsters between the ages of eight and 12 who play the mice-who-become-ponies, as well as the children of the town. Charm, grace, and discipline will be important considerations for these roles.
It is important to remember that none of the roles are pre-cast. All previous years' cast members must audition to be considered for this years' production!
About the production team
Cinderella will be directed and choreographed by RLT Artistic Director, Haskell Fitz-Simons. Music Director for this production will be Julie Florin. Missy Dapper will again assist with the choreography.
About the auditions
All those who wish to audition should prepare a bright, up-tempo song and bring the sheet music to the audition (in your key!). An accompanist will be provided. Those over the age of 12 will be asked to take part in a short movement audition as well, so wear comfortable clothing.
