Update on Magic Theatre
From the NY Times:
San Francisco Theater in Dire Straits
San Francisco Theater in Dire Straits The Magic Theater in San Francisco, a 42-year-old institution that has staged the premieres of works by Sam Shepard, David Mamet, Nilo Cruzmagictheatre.org.and others, may be on the verge of closing unless the company can raise $350,000 by Friday, according to the theater’s Web site. The Magic is facing a $600,000 debt and is one of a number of regional theaters on the precipice because of the dismal economic climate. By Sunday afternoon the fund-raising goal seemed to be within reach, as the Magic’s Web site reported $213,000 in donations received. Perhaps it will follow in the footsteps of another California company, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, which was in similar straits a few weeks ago and was able to raise more than $400,000 quickly. Some recent stories of economic ills in regional theater have not ended happily, though: the Carousel Dinner Theater in Akron, Ohio, closed its doors for good following Saturday night’s performance of “All Shook Up.”
